Some colors are naturally more included than othersNatural color diamonds can be highly desirable even with clarity of SI1, SI2…even I1. The inherent color in these diamonds can mask the inclusions, and therefore even stones with SI1-SI2 can be eye-clean. This is particularly the case with Argyle Pink Diamonds. These coveted pink diamonds obtain their color from tremendous pressure during the formation process that causing their crystal lattice to twist, and frequently results in lower clarity crystals. Of the 55 diamonds offered in Argyle’s 2011 Tender, considered their top stones of the year, only 7% were VS clarity, 22% SI1, and the remaining 71% were SI2 and I1 as graded by GIA. On the contrary, many natural blue and yellow diamonds are type II and formed in a less nitrogen rich environment, often resulting in higher clarity. According to GIA’s Gems and Gemology in a published report from 1998… 29% of blue diamonds were Flawless or Internally flawless, 21% were VVS, 34% VS and only 16% were SI or I.
